across the street
i always loved shows at kilgore's when i lived on daniels, because the show was across the street, about a block away. if i remember correctly, this was when i first heard the news that steve frye was leaving the band. a friend of my roommate brought his equiptment and got a patch into the board, which i still have my maxells of this show around here somewhere. a friend converted them onto disc a few years ago. this is a very solid show all round. johns cover of city of new orleans is nicely done, followed by a nice, bouncy backwoods. and then my personal favorite version of walk real slow.....slow! the first set closes out with a climatic arctic song. a few of us went back to my house to enjoy a smoke, and returned for the second set. dave got things going with loner, followed by my all time favorite....chicago! steve frye gave a very nice version of the bluesy old john henry, followed by a beautiful mississppi steamboat with daves nice work on the black and whites. the set closed out with an upbeat carousel. the encore got the drunken crowd involved with somewhere down the line.....very good show! nice to see the guys again and hang out with them for a bit. funny thing about this show was the girl that kept bugging dave to braid his hair.....while he was playing!!! the way the stage set up was there, his back was right next to the crowd. you can even hear it on the tapes! truely a funny moment!

Bye John:(
This was the last time i saw John sing and it was not the best night night for him. I remember he staggard on to the stage. The second song was his to sing and I was just a bunch of mumbling. His rythem was off. He was toasted if you didn't catch that. He tryed to sing the third song and gave up about half way through. I think Katz finished it for him. He left the stage and did not return again. A couple days later i heard he did it again and you know the rest of the story.. I found ot He was out of the band a week or so later. The 6 people i was going to Hookahville with burned there tickets that night at party and refused to go to the show with out John playing. Obviosly they were not the only ones to do so cause attendance went from 1600 or so the previous Hookahville to only 800. I was only fifteen and was just happy to run away from home for a week so I went to that Hookahville. It was still fun, JB on purcusion was a treat. But it was still missing a big part of the show with out John. It wasn't till i meet Ed that I realized I LOVE JOHN. But Mullins Band shows were the best. His Early band was insane. Carlos on bass, Keener on electric fiddle, ? on Sax, Mark Harmon on keys, STEVE FRY BABY! and of course J O H N! Good time EH then MB EH then MB every week alternating weekends. WOOO HOOOO!

my friend sings with the band
this, i believe was one of the last hookahvilles i've been too. i recall getting to meet merl and talk to him for a couple minutes. one of my best friends in the world got to sing with the band on so they say. she would later have the opportunity to sing with them on a regular basis and join dave in his solo band. what a fun night!

Yes Yes
This is the Show that Leftover opened up. This was the first time I had ever seen Leftover. I WAS BLOWN AWAY! Amazing LOS show. EH came out with a first set that matched LOS energy, super fast super up beat. Then... The second set .. OMG its not to often I get put in my place by Hookah but this show was rediculus. To this day I still see Red lights and Super zone out sounds. The Vipers Drag had to have been 25+ min long. That was just the begining. By the end of the night I had tossed my sandels in the River and was playing in a puddle under the stands. Crazzy. I think they were tryin to show LOS fun is fun but HOOKAH is HOOKAHHHH!!!!!;)

This really wasn't at Ludlow's, rather the area outside and down the hill from there. It was a Brewery Festival if I remember correctly. Hookah, Mullins and JGB/Melvin played outside. Great night of music and fun...

SSSSIIIISSSSTTTERRR SSSSUUGGGAAARR
WOW, Remember this one too. Got there on sunday with my folks from OU. Only about 80 cars still there.?. Someone told me that they had arested about 35 people for breathing to heavy at a festival. I guess the law was tryin to make a point. I was happy when they played 35 it was fitting. There was hardly and rec. drugs, good thing we were coming from Athens County. I end up giving a couple groups of kids my stash i had just re-uped. It felt good to get these people in the right mood for a show since they came from so far away. Penn. and W.V. Well anyway set up my friend gear he was so kind to let me use. The Valley was just a bunch of fog. you couldnt see more than 20 feet in front of you. Dave was getting zapped from his piano, so they covered it up after only a couple of songs. But the highlight of that night was the sister Sugar that had to have been 20min. the vocal breakdown in that song was so spooky that a one point all you could here was Hissing and screeming and creepy ass noises. The kid in front of me began to wig out (HARD) he finaly took off running away from the area we were standing. And i mean standing no dancing just people looking at each other confused and scared. The friends I brought had gone to a few Hookahville's but were not ready for this. They told me later they just wanted to get away from the noise. I made it so much crazier because you couldn't even see the stage. This was a show to remember. Thanks Boys for the chills. TSSSS TTSSSSSS TTTSSSS

LOVE
Wow, one of the night I accualy still remember. Took off from the T-town AKA the Glass Apple late as fuck. didn't get down there till the second set. I'm sure a few of you have this problem as well.? Anyway, First song of the second set was that killer Werewolves with Vern. I new from there on out it was gonna b a special night. Beautiful playing though the set until Vipers Drag and that was the highlight for me. I remember laughing uncontrolably when Katz sang "Roll your cock a piece of cotton candy. First time i ever heard that one. Then the When I die, this has been a favorite song of mine since my dad gave me my first Blood Sweat and Tears album when i was like 13. I drove 2 1/2 stoned hours to catch an hour and a half of music and it was soooo worth it. SDTL Mojo

Definately One For The Vault!
This is one of the most amazing Hookah shows and setlits of all time! The Alexander may be the best ever! Sure Cure, the ever rare Blues Forgotten not to mention some Hookah classics lazy river and day by day with Sharon, My own Way and a sick Alexander>Werewolves of London>Backwoods>Alexander. This was before Polanski was a full time member and he sat in the whole show. Could do with out The Giant and Tree House, but some great Ed tunes Surround, Spiders. Blue Sky encore nuff' said!

One of the Best
Ive seen Hookah since 97. But this show right here was a throw down. I remember leaving the theater covered in sweat. Especially after the the 2nd Set. This show rocks from start to finish and i think Hookah was the last act to play at this place before they tore it down. LIsten and Learn b/c you wont find another set list like this now. Im glad I was there. Peace Ya'll Robby

Very observent China. I think I meet you that day. But I just wanted to add there were a few people that you could tell was not used to the No Hassels or bad aditudes vibe that a EH show brings. But in all I had fun. Thank to what ever group that was that put on the rare UT EH GIG. Woooo Hooo

The Ledges
Geez. Oh, where to begin. I guess from the beginning would be best. I had not planned on packing for the weekend until a little too late and consequently started out on lack of sleep. close to 7 hours in two nights and I got up at 5am to go to work and then left straight from there for the ledges. well, attempted to at least. It was about an extra hour drive longer than I thought it was going to be be, but no problem there(at least not that I knew of at the time), because I was with the Irvman in his wonderful beast of machinery, the 1970 Buick GTO ragtop (mint condition). that puppy hauls, period. 0 to 60mph in 2.5 seconds flat. It was a wonderfully beautiful drive and the company couldn't have been better. We were cranking up the 7/3 CDs and eventually met with chopper at the gate. He gave us the low down and what was up. we drove around back under the shaded canopy of trees for almost an hour, trying to find an empty campsite before we ended up just parking someplace out of the way. the potholes were about the most treacherous obstacle of the weekend, as we will find out later in the review. finally out of the heat and under the shade, out of the car and doing things that resemble "the irv stretch". life is good. by this time the priorities were to find out where i was in coordination with everything else and to get set up. I usually go in my pick up and hop under the cap to sleep. so for the first time in three years i was going to a festival with all the trimmings. tent, sleeping bag and so on. Very relaxing. My home away from home for a few days. it was a perfect night to look forward to and it was time for me to go find ol' bill and get the logistics of my duties all figured out and get ready for show time. i was pretty exhausted by this point, just on sleep deprivation alone, but what I didn't know and was about to find out, was the combination of my space-headedness and the ragtop proved to be of serious consequences. Ouch! Lobsters aren't as red as the top of my semi-freshly shaven bald head. no thinking of putting suntan lotion on while in transport let the sting slowly set in and now it's time to pay the piper. so it's now close to show time. the stage was set up so that it was facing toward the shaded camping, with the quarry off on the left and vending pretty much all around. what were the boys going to play after being juiced up from not playing for a while? Whatever it would be, I knew they were going to be primed. rested up and ready to roll. I hadn't seen much of the band up to this point, except for Steve and ed. and was still wondering if Sharon had made it up. I'll have to say that there is much improvement on the harmony in Lazy River and Day By Day. the click got tighter somewhere along the line and it sounded great (not that it doesn't always). a couple of new treats for me were the second part to Alexander and the little Maggie surprise out of Clifford. they took a very quick set break and were back on stage faster than the Sweney picker himself. i really love hearing the masquerade and then as typical of late, Johnny and Eric started off on doing their drum thing. I was just thinking to myself that i wish they would bust into something other than Chicago as a segue from this tune. sure enough somebody was all over that call. Backwoods Rose in late second set. Woohoo! Soon the show was over and it was time to pack up and head back to the site and meet up with the people i knew. i decided to get a little giddy and attempt to hang with the big boys until the wee hours (on no sleep). The funniest thing i saw all weekend, and i apologize to Irv up front for telling' (although I already asked permission), it had me rolling'. a bunch of us are sitting around a fire and watching the campfire embers glow, when a group of people decided to go wander and meander. It ended up it was just me, Irv and Geena sitting there when Irv decided to go to our site to get a refill. about 15, to what seemed 20 minutes later I'm wondering where Irv was, as it was only two minutes to the fridge and back. low and behold, who show up? coming from the opposite side of where the campsite was, with mud covered halfway between his knees to his ankles, there's the man himself. I came to realize that he should have borrowed my flashlight and was actually going to say something when he got back. well, it was just a little too late for that notion. those potholes that were filled with mud proved to be very dangerous, especially with about half the people walking around without some sort of light source and the other half without shoes. to top matters off, after attempting to take a drink from his cup, Irv says, "it's time for another refill." I thought to myself that was the goal of his adventure in the first place. it turns out he never made it there. I about lost it! Okay Irv, I owe you big for this one (unless you want to trade it for that Wallkkk Reeaaalllll Slllooowwwwww). between my sunburn and his feet, we were looking for a little more upward adventure the following day. So the canopy of trees kept me cool and I actually slept till almost noon time. As I awoke to greet the day with a little Metallica slammed in my ear, I decide it was time to hit the quarry. The sand, the water, and the ever the master of nemesis to my burn, all rolled up in one for a few hours of mellowness. it turns out that these three girls were sitting next to me and chopper walks up and i hear them say something to him about having found someone who taped the Jamaica shows. my grin cracked a bit and I knew the second I would look over, that Chopp's finger was going to start pointing. so I said that I did. she requested a copy of the third night and proceeded to ask me if I remember a wedding proposal being made. Well, guess who? boy it's a small world. I told her congrats and to email me. eventually I got in the water and wow, was it comfy. a great relief on a sunny, hot summer's day. Stayed in for about an hour before hooking up to chat with the farmer j himself. A few crazy stories later and I'm drinking stout out of a cup. You can now see where the rest of my day was going. as we caught glimpses of the Sultans of Bing in the background and those guys are wonderful-check them out if you can), decided it was time for food and a change of clothes. Kim and I went to the Burrito Bago and hung out with my friend - the Colonel, as the sprinkles of rain came down. had a few more beers and decided it was time to head to the campsite for a few more, and to chat with some more friends that i hadn't seen that I ran into. so it was off to get set up before show time. A lot more people this night and another interesting evening about to unfold. The boys started out of the gate with awesome enthusiasm. loner sandwich with a silver train that puts the sparkle in my eye and a grin on my face. I danced to my hearts content. Riversong was such a wonderful follow up. As a mere consideration to all the razzing I had given Irv, I decided to plead and beg a request from Dave right before the show started, for the almighty Walk Real Slow, which from this day forward, the slow version of this song should be deemed "Irv style". What a wonderful treat. It is stuck in my head the whole day today. Thank you Dave. Spiders was a great way to end a set. The rain started to not want to hold off much longer. It felt good for a bit, until it eventually turned chilly. People were heading for cover when the boys came back on for the remainder of the show. I hadn't heard "Are you experienced?" hookah style yet, the Hendrix tune. The transition into through hiker was very subtle. Steve the Juggler made an appearance on stage with his four glow in the dark balls. After leaving the stage he suddenly appeared on the roof of the stage swinging these ropes of some sort that were on fire on the end of them. Eventually the owners of the place had to ask him to get down for safety purposes. It was cool to look at for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed "to good friend's past", something I rarely hear these days. The &"Dire Wolf" caught me entirely off guard. The harmony on this tune with Steve singing lead, was simply amazing. For only playing this tune once, it sure was good. time to pack up quickly, as the rain was coming down harder. I ended up going to bed shortly after the show, half on the account of the rain and half on the fact that we were planning on leaving early in the morning. so now my sunburned body is home and relaxing in the AC and typing at you. Sorry for the bandwidth and your time, if you're still with me at the end. Hope all is well in hookahland and as soon as i evaluate thetapes, I'll be making an offer. From what I've heard so far, they're pretty sweet. Peace out.

Newport Music Hall
What a tripped out night here in Cowtown. wW had everyone from the devil to popes and nuns, from the Wizard of Oz club to Dave Katz impersonators. it was a night beyond description, especially with Elvis in the house. The energy was off of this planet, as the band tuned up. The opening act cancelled and the boys took the stage about quarter after ten or so. Oh yeah, the costumes. Ed dressed up as an ear of corn, with yellow balloons on the top half and green spandex looking things about midway down. Sweney decked himself this year, more than any other I can remember. he rocked the boat Viking style, while cliff looked like someone straight out of jolly Ol' London. More specifically, Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Dave took on the role of a pirate, and a fancy one at that. From the percussion section, Eric dressed up as Champagne, the Rasta singer lady that opened in Jamaica. Too funny. The Johnny P dressed as a female nun. what a hoot. when they open up with Alexander, you know it's gonna be a barn burner. From there, Elvis (aka Irv) even approved of one of the finer walk real fasts. We all know about that yellow sign that says slippery when wet, as I been down that road was followed by a Tree House that was worthy of making my way to the front row. Dave then got on his drum and he, Eric and Johnny P. kicked it for a while until the wind gave way and they unleashed a rippin' backwoods rose. Dave Weissman took the boys up on their offer to play with them if he'd dress up as the Simpson's millhouse. He was a fine one at that, picking up that Les Paul and making it sing sweetly to the tune of Blow'em Away. The set closed with another annual rendition of monster mash, sung by the Bocephus looking soundman himself, Ol' Bill. this time with words in hand. To top off the set, he drug out a huge bin of mashed, whipped potatoes and a dustpan and just started whipping them into the crowd. crazy stuff, I tell you. the set was over 1 1/2 hours, and the set break was only a quick 15 minutes or so before the most haunting, tripped out version of Spiders unfolded. Cliff then spouted out the bluegrass style rendition of John Henry, only to be followed up by an awesome Octofrye. Red Light Boogie followed, with an extensive Streetbeater to tie things together nicely before playing a new cover tune, Clap For the Wolfman. and how could a Halloween be complete without hearing the masquerade kick into a serious rhythm jam which entailed cliff and Dave dueling off with swords before the wrapped it up and brought it back into a close knitted Chicago. Dave then picked up the acoustic and a few bottles of the spray string stuff, as he and Ed went off attempting to spray into the crowd. From there they brought back the bluegrass theme with Silver Train, a tune that I think makes everyone get up and dance. ed spouted back with bone to close an awesome set. the boys came out and encored with an energetic ecstasy that led into an unbelievable not fade away, complete with cliff and ed jumping from the drum riser, all in all, wouldn't miss it for the world. They seem tighter and happier than ever, and more people dressed up than not. Well, even with the time change I'm a little exhausted so I must sign off for now. Can't believe I actually got a review done too. hope all is well in hookahland. Take care.

Agora
We arrived at the agora around 8PM or so and got acquainted with the venue one more time. I hadn't made a trek to this wonderful theatre since they played the psychedelic festival with widespread panic and hypnotic clambake in, I believe, march of 94. how beautiful. we goofed around and randomly chatted with friends until the opening act started. I think their name was the Andy Johnson Explosion. anyone confirm this? i didn't stick around for much, but they seemed, and i know it's not right to make comparisons to other bands, but a cross between electric 90's bob Dylan and Elvis Costello. the boys eventually took the stage and christened the night with backwoods rose. over the years this song has come a long way in the bands stability and they show us why in this rendition. boy does it sound polished. you know it's going to be a good night when the second tune out of the gate begins with one of the funkiest sugar jams I've ever heard. The twistling of the ivory and the thumping impact of Clifford dropping the bomb on my chest, literally set me in my seat. I think ed was having technical difficulties with the acoustic when he launched the giant. fe fi fo fum. the boys though it would be goofy to enact a baseball skit of some sort, so ed took the guitar and acted like he was batting. Clifford was catching and Dave was at the keyboard pitching. Starrcatt handled the ball while Eric reenacted the sound of the ball on the kick drum. poor Steve. i think he was better left to sit and figure out what exactly was going on. Dave pranced around with the ever so melodic, happy go lucky tune, brighter day. tree house was to follow. what a gem. I love this song as much as the next. Irv, your bumming. Sharon graced the stage with her presence accompanying the boys with the Robbie Robertson tune, it makes no difference. back to hee haw time as Dave took to the strings for silver train. then they let loose a new tune, an instrumental tune that has about as much potential to evolve as the Dead's own dark star. Dave said he's calling it dumpster. I didn't ask the details as to why and just accepted the fact. this closed the set and a bit of time to relax before the lights dropped again. Ed took the stage solo style and offered us much to celebrate at the beginning of the second set. in honor of earth day and peter Frampton's 50th birthday, he sang another first time played, All I Wanna Be (is by your side). Talk about nailing some high pitches. whew! the band then came back on stage and Dave kicked down a rather absorbing My Own Way that gravitated into Lax. their transitions from song to song seem to be getting more subtle and it works well. After a few second stall, Dave brings us find out that subtle-ized itself into what I thought was a ear whacking experience, sifting into a sweetly beautiful mountain home. those of you that at the last second decided not to go, you missed the highlight of the night here. they continued on their way through the set with a fatty Ecstasy, before ed barked out bone. i didn't recognize Clap for the Wolfman at first, as i hadn't heard it since Halloween. it worked well gliding into the spaced out, high intensity tune that always seems to take the roof off the place. Something about Slipjig that blows my mind. leaving the stage on a high note, the boys had yet to do an encore. when they came back out and Dave was on acoustic guitar, I thought only one thing. somewhere down the line. it seems like I haven't heard that tune in a bit. while Eric and the Starrcatt gave us a little rhythm groove for a minute or two in the sandwich, the night slowly came to an end. safely home and sound, it's now after 1:15AM, and I have to get up in under 4 hours. For those of you have made it all the way to the end, thank you for letting me share the experience. I hope all is well in hookahland. Enjoy your day.

My first official EH show...
while i'm pretty sure i caught the boys a couple times prior to this show it was more to drink underage at the venue than see a show, so i'm not going to count those... i remember grabbing some tall beers from a fellow and getting down to the stage for Uncle Sam Blues. remember being able to buy beer from the roaming coolers? and not the 12oz either... i think the hook for me may have been pretty much the second set.

Backdoor ticket
i believe this was a sold out show once i got there and about cried at being denied at the door as i had just recently fallen in love with the band. my friend and i walked around a bit and noticed the side door was propped open and was unguarded. we popped in and took position in the corner. soon after the guy watching the door was back on post, (piss break?) and i got too enjoy the solo sets, furthering my addiction....

What a night in Cleveland!
I am writing this review almost nine years after the show, but it was that good. This was when I first started getting in to EH and I remember being a little bummed that on this particular leg of their tour with Moe they had to open. Opening with Good Time was fun to start moving to, but they were immediately on fire with the fairly new song Dragonfly. That is still one of my favorite songs to listen to. The Slipjig was phenomenal, but it is a little wierd as the song is usually done in the dark with a lot of lights behind it; and at this point of the night it was still light out. After they rocked that out they jumped in to another favorite of mine, Moonstone. At this point it had been lights out rocking for 40 minutes and Ohio Grown slowed it down for about 8 minutes till we were all Keepin Time. Archie Bunker died the day before and we got a hilarious rendition of Those Were the Days with everyone chipping in. We kicked off another 40 minutes of Funky Jamming with Float and a big funky Boogie Chillun and Let's Make It sandwich. It slowed down for another 8 minutes before the band blew the doors off with a rocking Spiders. I remember Hush being one of those songs that just naturally sounded good the first time I heard them play it and this night was no exception. They jammed it out really hard to the point you didn't think they could top it, but the ecstasy to follow was Mach 10. We were so blown away that it would have been tough for anyone to follow that. However, their was a 40 minute set change and Moe did come out hot. Steve joined them as well that night and it was a phenomenal show. By far one of my top 20 EH shows. Funny note: NSYNC was playing at Quicken Loans arena that night and the flats was back to back traffic all night, till our show got over with.

This was what I believe was one of the last shows with their old sound guy. The difference in sound is extremely evident. This show was pretty amazing with the computer modifications to the sound output.

4th of July show
This was one of the best shows I have ever seen ever! On the 4th of July in 2003 with lead singer Ed McGee rocking out this is when Hookah was in there prime. Each member came out for a solo acoustic set for set #2 and Dan on the fiddle was unbelievable. This was the first and only time I have ever seen my favorite song ever A Good Bunch of Biscuits and it rocked my socks off. If only we could travel back in time and see show again.

The girls 1st hookah!
This weekend was spectaculer, sat night I got to take my mom, nieces and nephew, to the Hookah terrace show. Kelly jo and brooke came along as well so we had a huge group. The babies loved it! Some nice person gave each a glow stick and they ran around with all the other kids chasing theri glowsticks....oh and Hookah was playin in the background but it was all background noise to them. I had a blast. I got to carry my signs and shake my tail...and i mean literall tail, I was wearin a tail: Which by the way are for sale if anyone wants one please msg me:o) My sign said "Hookahheads KNOW how to shake their tails" Dave kept lookin and laughing. When they played Party Girl i had to run back and get Kelly, my other sign and their special surprise....a handmade schwa thong *courtasy of Penni Patches and it was never worn!!!* My other sign said "Party Girls wear schwa undies" and during party girl I threw em....the first attempt made it about to the front of the crowd, so i ran closer to grab them and threw em again. Cliff almost caught them on his bass but didnt lol....It was def a great time! Kelly, joel and I stayed up till 4am drinking and talking. Yeah that def resulted in a horrible sun morning hangover. Kelll and brook stayed over at my house sat night and sun omg it gets even better.......

This Show
This was an awesome show... I still remember it because of the schwa panties. My daughter Brooke was there but in a bad mood considering she had gotten bit by my brothers dog earlier that day and was there with stiches in her face.... poor girl. We threw the Schwa panties to Cliff because he was the first to read the sign and laugh, it was by no means about throwing them to a single guy, which some people got mad at me about saying we shouldn't have trown to Cliff cuz he had a girlfriend. Whatever. These pantys stick out in my mind because John brought them back at the Newport later that year during Party Girl.... He said "hey Party Girl, I think you left these, at Centennial, they are schwa panties" Best moment ever and was captered on the DVD they made at the Newport that night... But back to Centennial, Nem was there too, and I taught Joel how to tie a hoop on top of a car when we left. Great times... and love you Steph.

BBQ
So after a crazy night...we got up to babies wanting to go to the park, after they got home from church of course. Kell and i reluctantly got up and took em to the park across the street. After a few aspirin, and a bit of time at the park Kell and i were ready to go. The drive to Niles was pretty much like goin to nlqp so it was a really easy drive. Since i drank last night i let Joel be the drunk one this time. Kell was nice enough to let him help her with the beer she got and give us $20 for the ride home *thanks so much and i stil owe ya* What can i say about Hookah...Heres what i wrote off of Hookahheads: It def was a great show...nice intimate crowd of hookahheads, Place packed with great ribs though...many dif selections. It was like a mini carnaval they had rides and games, food and beer, and Hookah. If ya missed it ya missed a good one. You could literally feel the energy emanating from the guys to the crowd and back to the guys. Cliff was on point and had a smile on the entire show...everytime i looked at him it made me giggle cause he had such a bigass grin. John sounded good...Ive never been a huge fan of Johns voice that much, but this show he sounded great! Steve, well what can we say, he was Steve.........Freakin amazing!!! And Eric sang Deep River and it was electric, and he hilarously changed some of the lyrics at the it to something like: I licked her feet i licked her toes, from the Ribs at Fatty Joes. Thats prolly wayyyyyy off but it was great, I love hearin him sing he has a great voice. What can i say about Dave....I was front row center right by him and he was having fun......bounicin his foot to every song and sounding amazing, his voice was on point. I feel like him and john have been working hardcore on their melodies cause their harmony together was fantastic. I wanna hear black water, whoever taped it, cause during the singalong part i swear to you that i was the loudest. Everytime i stopped, to ya know breath and stuff, it was so much quieter...I think it was between me and kell for the loudest to sum it all up: Great sat, great sun!!!Great weekend!!!!!!!!! Lets do it again Kell

debut
my girlfriends first ekoostik hookah show! i've been seeing them for 17-18 years and this is her first :p my best friends in the whole world opened up for them....deepwater junction. they had done so many, many times in the past(with yours truly sitting in on keys once at bogarts!) this was a very solid show! great set list for my taste. the under full sail opener is huge! the san griol is beautiful. seagull=>sheepdog was outstanding! followed by one world, love this song and dave and john doing shadane and then a rockin' hush to close the set. dave started things off nicely with way of the world with a great reciprocity after. sam mccully and ol montana back to back and party girl to close! revival brought me back to the early days....nice closer!

My after birthday show
Yesterday was my birthday and I had such an awesome time with my family and friends. My mom brought me some cutie clothes and got a cake, my coworker got me a few awesome things, and my boyfriend took me out to see a movie all in all is was a pretty awesome day. But today has nothing to do with my birthday it has to do with Ekoostik! For all those that don't know Ekoostik is one of my top three favorite bands ever in my life that I've seen over a hundred times and travelled near and far for. They are a really awesome Ohio grown band that has a freaky unique style of music that consists of rock, jam, bluegrass, and you know it just is what it is: Ekoostik style. Ekoostik style is the rough yet harmonious vocals of John Mullins and him sometimes forgetting his lyrics, the always mind melting soulful twangs of Steve Sweney's guitar the sound as if the guitars a vocalist in itself, the always funky bass jam of Cliff Starbuck or the way he plays the harmonica like it's a body function and him sometimes forgetting his lyrics, Eric Lanese's boom in your chest beat of the drum but ever melodious thunder in his voice and yet again hard rock Harley driving side, and Dave Katz intoxicating voice and the way he plays his piano like making love to a sexy lady sometimes soft and slow, and sometimes rough and dirty. We have gone through many trials and tribulations with our fellows, good times and great times. I've been traveling to see Ekoostik for the past 7-8 years and that's not even a lot compared some people. We are a tight knit group of people. I've made many long lasting friends that I consider my family. Traveling around with Kellyjo and brookie, attempting cheerleading costumes with Allie, going to ville after ville festival after festival, listening to the ever wise words of Nem, getting bear hugs from BrotherMike, always looking up to Liz and Corrine, being jealous of the photos that Chris takes, riding a bus to Georgia with all the crazies there are too many too even mention. Over the years I've gotten to know the members of the band and their families as well and consider them my family. Anyway what was I talking about again, oh yeah the hookah concert. So I woke up today alone since Joel had to work early and I'm giddy but there's no one here to share. As soon as I heard his key in the door I jumped for joy and skipped down the stairs. I was going to ask him if he remembered what today was but I hadn't let him forget for the past few weeks so I settled with a kiss. I cashed my check, paid some bills, watched Joel play Mario tennis while I put on makeup and doused myself with black glitter then we were on our way. Being a hookahhead through and through I knew that the show was at headliners instead of the before planned Civic Theater. I wanted to be there at 9:00 but we didn't end up getting there till 9:30. Of course we made the usual bet of when hookah was going to go on, I always think it's going to be earlier and Joel always knows it isn't. He said he knew that they weren't going to be on when we got there and he was so positive he took the long way to prove it too me. The whole way I kept asking "are you lost, are you lost". We finally did arrive and so did hookah and it was lights camera action time. How else can I describe Ekoostik except to say fun was defiantly had by all! The first set finally let me release that bouncing energy that I had built up over the past weeks but it had enough slow moments to not let me burn completely out. Tumblin defiantly is always a great way to start the show. I once again floated my way to my front designated spot, if you don't know its Katz side for me. I was always bouncing even in while unhealthily smoking "What, u guys don't know how to slither like a Serpentine?" I was singing and dancing while smoking, waiting in line for my beer, and even in the bathroom. The guys appeared to be really enjoying themselves and that always makes the shows so much better. They really seemed to be in sync with each other. As soon as I got up front, saw Dave and he wished me Happy Birthday before going into the next song I knew this was going to be a fun one. Deep River blues was a great added feature because I always love hearing Eric sing, his voice was smooth like butter. In the clouds sent my head floating up to the risers. The soul in Dave's voice like put me in a trance that felt like a dream. Then John took it into stuck in the snow and I felt like a zombie but instead of brains I feed on intense lyrical content and deep meaning. Too much metaphor, I'll try my best to stop but it's so hard. Sheepdog was like icing on my birthday cake. It seemed like you could hear more feet stomping then Eric's drumming. I always feel like I'm at some crazy psycadelic hoedown where all the people are cover in tie-dye and patchwork yet still slapping their knees and doe see doeing. At one point I literally had to stop to breathe, damn cigarettes. I used the little I had left to boogie to shadane then got relieved when john said they were taking a break. I needed to sit for a minute, hey what can I say, I just turned 25 the day before I'm old. Joel jokingly said "I got my Sheepdog, I'm ready to go." I just laughed, he knew there was no way he was dragging me out till the fat lady sings or at least till the encore. Black Mamba started off the next set of what I thought was just pure magic. Before the show Joel and I made a bet on a game of Mario Tennis, If he won he would have full control of the show. I mean full control like where to stand, when to go up front, and gasp how much beer I could drink and the bet was vice versa. Can you tell who won? I used the bet to my advantage so by long way home I was up front center Dave side, the best side. Take that! Just kidding. Anyway carry on, Isis set us raging. Cliff was on point and at one point he used his head bandana to channel Jimi and took his bass all the way to the ground and brought it back up. He plucked his bass with fury and spit the harmonica with so much intensity. I was up front with a girl that made me giggle. She had a teeny tiny loner sign and she was trying to show Dave. Being the queen of the signs, I told her she needed it to be a bit bigger if she wanted to get his attention, then we jumped up and got his attention. The crowd was going crazy bananas by the time that here today started we all were on a definite cloud nine. The guys must have thought that all the bouncing built up an appetite because before we got to gone tomorrow we had a scrumptious bit of loner in there. Yummy! Many of you know me well and you know I don't like to be touched, stranger wise, and I stand my ground and I'm stubborn! So needless to say when a super drunk old bald guy came up and wacked me right in the head to get to Dave it was more than I could handle. I'm a Katz side girl but I'll hold my ground like those crazy Sweney siders. So as he was winding up for air POW number two, I grabbed him by the arms and said "If you touch me again ill punch you in the face." Joel was right behind me and seemed a bit nervous that he was going to have to defend me in a fight, but without blinking an eye I started dancing it up again like nothing ever happened. By the end of loner I turned and that guy was completely gone, score one for me. After loner we were expecting a slow again but that didn't happen when they added the cheese to our sandwich by playing grass. Grass made us fly high and finishing loner then gone tomorrow, the here today was earlier, we were all stuffed to the brim. Of course during reciprocity Joel wanted to smoke but he doesn't understand the meaning it has for me. My first Ekoostik album ever was dubbabuddah; I listened to that CD for literally a year straight before I got another one. That CD was dust when I was through with it so he definitely didn't get cigarette time. By the time reciprocity was over he was fiending for a cigarette and they had said goodnight but in hookah tradition we knew the encore was coming soon. After a couple minutes of "Hoooooooooooooooooookah" Steve came back out and with the first minute of playing I knew what was coming. And when I die isnt one of the songs I requested but that's ok because it is one of my top five. After finishing my exercising for the night I blew Dave air kisses and we went on our way, what can I say I was exhausted! All in all hookah was on point, the crowd was full of devoted fans and my hookah belly was full, defiantly satisfying!

Dream show!? Can it be!?!?!?
I was at the camp site when i heard Carousel flow from the stage and the dream show had begun!!! Great set, personnally not my dream show, but a very big chunk of it. Some tech. problems with Johns guitar and the lights, but it was all part of the show. Although i don't remember some of these songs the show was again, one of my favorites. Utopia would have been a nice addition, regardless, awesome show!

a fun one!
was happy to have both voted and attended this show! was absolutely floored when XTC ended up being the #1 tune....oh well. aside from the sound issues at the beginning it was a solid show.

Blossom Fri!
The weekend started off on an odd note. The boards were on fire with speculation of cop city due to the unfortunate circumstances that had apparently happened the weekend before that some people were even debating on not going. Not us though, no measly cop is going to keep my Ekoostik from me as I had announced many times before this was my Jamaica, hookah being just recently back from their trip that I could not quite afford. The first set started us off in a Green way then they sent us to the Heavens, to mergatroid that is, a funky Mullins song that gets everyone pumped! When we got to the stage the crowd was sparse but as the song progressed the crowd seemed to grow bigger and bigger people came out of the woodworks, I guess others weren’t going to be frightened away either. As Walk real slow came on I started to notice some new things about Nelsons ledges and the stage area. They of course put newer sand down for our tootsies to walk on which is great for those who like to take their shoes off like me. They also seemed to have put in new speakers on each side of the band, nice ones loud ones! Also the added a laser to shine on the top of the stage in random patterns and waves right where the tapestry hangs above. Evan really spit shined the place up for all of us so let me be the first to say THANK YOU! Walk real slow jazzed and slowly creped by but I would have to say that Dave’s voice was on point, very melodious and yet had a rustic experienced sound as well. Sleepfast brought the vibe back up to a bouncing float. It felt as if everyone was on their toes, we had all been eagerly waiting for the spring hookah at the ledges and it was finally here. As Sleepfast ended the screams screeches and squeals proved to me that we were all home again. Coming back to me was like the boys were telling us yes in fact we were home. The thumping rhythm had us all twirling and jumping. Breathe a sigh of relief everyone, festival season is among us. City of New Orleans is always a treat and I just love how they don’t always save the covers for encore. You could feel the soul in Mullins voice and Daves was like adding cream to black coffee as they paid tribute to a legend. Sweney’s solo was another awesome little tidbit making the song an overall phenomenon. It was almost as if you could hear the entire crowd singing along, we were all in sync with one and other. Peter Tosh’s Burial come next and it paid homage to their recent trip to Jamaica. Cliff’s voice sounded great, I still to this day look as his small frame and not expect a voice that big to come out. The funky Jamaican jam had us saying pass the dutchie, but not to that guy he’s a cop all speculation of course. Next came a song more on the bluegrass side of the field with Silver train, a song that always makes me want to travel the world more. Chicago came next and it is one of those jams that start off on a slower side but crescendos to be a huge number. Riding with the king was last and it was a great way to end the first set. Way of the world started off our second set off on another great note. Steeped into to tears proved the phenomenal power of the Mullins lyrical content which lead us right into a huge almost ten minute helping of yummy Voodoo Stew. For those hungry bellies that still weren’t completely satisfied yet we got our first lyrical sandwich with Intrepid Traveler a extremely tasty bit of Ol’ John Henry in the middle and the finishing touches of Intrepid Traveler. Without any recover time from that we were hit right upside the head with yet another Sammy. Loner is starting to become one of those songs that everyone and their brother know all the words to and we all proved that true when Dave handed off the mike to the crowd and had us finish the opening. As if we were all singular parts of the band we did our part and sang it as loud as we could with incredible heart and soul. They smooshed Loner with another of all Ohio folk’s favorite songs: Ohio Grown. It exclaims the best way to describe this place that sometimes feels as if a prison to us but when were gone for awhile is like heaven on earth. The end of Loner was like a great ending to a phenomenal set! That wasn’t the end yet with a little teaser they left and came back for the encore of Rocky Mountain Way then sent us all to bed. Wow what a night I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us tomorrow.

Blossom Sat!
Saturday started off turbulent mainly because the wind felt as if it was going to lift us up in our tents like when Dorothy was on her way to oz. With the wind aside the day was absolutely amazing the sun was high and warm, the quarry was soft and chill and the polar bears were out in full force. Polar bears? Yes a group of fire blooded individuals actually jumped the cliff of the ledges into the ice cold water below. The day consisted of dancing and swaying to the assortment of bands, frolicking on the beach, hooping around, or just relaxing baking in the sun. When the sun started setting I saw the beach was abuzz with things going on. Being a veteran of Blossom I knew what was coming soon: the skydivers. Every year they have a couple sky divers fly or I guess fall down from an air plane right onto the beach. It’s a phenomenal site to see the precision that these guys possess in order to get on the right timing and direction to land right on the beach. As soon as they landed and all that mayhem ended hookah took stage and we were all ready to start again for another night. Mullins started our feet out stomping the ground with Washboard Annie then took us into a great version of Thumper. Next they took us on a journey down the Raging River and the guys were on point. Steve’s solo was amazing as always and they really seem to be enjoying this old/new song. After that we heard an actual new song with the new Mullins tune All fall in dreams. Dave came on after to lets us know not to let it get us down because there will always be a Brighter Day. After I felt almost all bounced out Mullins brought they level down a bit with Bluebird which is becoming one of my all time favorite Mullins songs. Mexican opera is always a treat and Three way street kept the tone on a very chill level. Sun goes down was a great way to end the second set off with a bang, jump, knee slap, and bounce. After a short break they started us off again with Ballad of Sam McCully that got us really moving and going. Backwoods rose kept us bouncing off the walls and boogieing. Next was the first Red Newt of 09’ and it Cliff sounded great vocally and on the harmonica. Cripple creek ferry slowed everything down again to a calm trickle like a nice slow float. They brought us back up again to end it with a great mix of Waterbear and Black Mamba that lasted a good thirty minutes of face melting jam. The mix of Dave, John, and Cliff on Waterbear honestly to me sounded a bit off but the harmonies of Black Mamba made up for it. They finished on stage and left to many yells and screams of hookah! They came back on to attempt the Simon and Garfunkel classic Scarborough Fair which to me fell a bit flat but I heard that technical difficulties made it that way and next time it will be on point. I applauded the guys for their attempt on an extremely vocally difficult song. Might I add please don’t play it as an encore, it’s a great song but an encore song it isn’t! Party girl always brings the tempo up on a raunchier note and Keepin’ time ended the weekend on a foot stompin, knee slappin, toe taping, and downright raging fun! It was a great weekend full of friends, family, sun, wind, love peace and happiness. The whole cop situation only dampened the situation slightly but it was not enough to keep us hookahheads down. The weekend in total was a great way to start out a wonderful summer full of music, camping and fun and I personally can’t wait! Let it all begin!

NYE 2009
cliff's "last" show with the band was, as expected, one to remember. for some of us! haha..some meories include solo's and duo's and banjo's. SFS played some sick-nasty acoustic Monnett. was nice to hear everyone do their own thing. there was cliff's funny hats and his funky boogie break down dancing :)...it was a rare blue moon and the theme was put to use with "circle of the moon", "hide behind the moon", and "blue moon of kentucky." there were dueling double bass features and the sickest "sister sugar" of the decade took place. of course there was some harmonica in there. other song highlights, for me, include "thumper" and "green." it was nice to have the added elements..especially the sax. but i am biased on that one. love me some horn action!! overall, was most definetely the way bring in 2010. thanks boys!

Right back in it!
The guys definitely brought-it the other night with Phil playing his first show. I felt a good 'high energy vibe' from the group and it seems they will keep on rolling along without losing a step. The absence of Cliff will change the dynamic of the group but I do believe change is good. Although, "it may seem strange to rearrange" Phil is talented and "it could be better than it used to be." Definitely was stoked to hear new songs from both Katz and Mullins. Rollercoaster was a seldom heard favorite to get the crowd syked and all around face-shredding by Dr. Sweeney (i.e. Thumper, Grass, Chicago etc.)was well received. Always a class act, Dealio

31 West Moment of Gratitude
Pretty amazing moment of being present last night. Walking across Church Street, some of the upstairs windows of 31 West were open with the unseasonably warm evening. “Backwoods Rose” was just flowing out into the street….I just grinned and was so happy to see, hear, and feel everything as normal. So grateful to be able to enjoy the best music with some of the best people again. Feels like I knew damn near everyone there! I found this post from that night and thought I would share! ✌️
