Just one breeze, so sudden in the heavy summer heat, a whisper cool and smooth the night refuses to repeat, a swish of leaves against themselves, so lush after May rains, a momentary murmur in the calm the night maintains, a brief caress so cautious, so gentle then it's gone, I gaze into the dark for any glimpse of where it's drawn. And then I'm left bewildered, and oddly pleased and stirred, as if that sudden evening chill had called and I had heard; my eyes, beneath the maple there, so wide till they adjust, till silver, teal, and charcoal fill a valley wrapped in rust; and off toward the west a little pond quite still, serene, and luminous as moonstone lights the hillside in between. And gazing down toward the glow I finally catch the sight: that breeze upon its journey rippling tall grass in the night; as quickly as it passed by me, I watch it touch the pond, which quivers just as I had, so gently then it's gone.
